The Great Place for the Right Gift- The Bombay Store Franchise
The Bombay Store was established in the early 1900s, while India was still under the British rule. It had started as the manifestations of mass awakening to patronise all that was 'Swadeshi' i.e. made in India. The idea of having a chain store that would house all items that were made in India was evolved by reputed persons like Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Jamshedji Tata among others.
Thus, Bombay Swadeshi Co-operative Stores Co. Ltd. came into existence on 14th December, 1905. A year later on December 17th, the flagship store was inaugurated by Dadabhai Naoroji. At that time, the store was located at the present Times of India Building in Mumbai.
In 1938, the location of the store was shifted to its present location on Pherozeshah Mehta Road. It was in 1963 that it became the first retail organisation to be listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange in the name of Bombay Swadeshi Stores Ltd.
The swadeshi movement has little significance in the current period of globalisation. As the store now caters to an audience with a contemporary mindset, in 1995, the brand was re-christened as 'The Bombay Store.’ Over the years, it has provided gifting solutions to clients such as J Walter Thompson, Taj Hotels, Siemens, ITC group, Hindustan Lever Ltd., Thomas Cook, Standard Chartered, DSP Merill Lynch and others. 01.06.2007
