The fast food franchise was launched by Fred Deluca, a college-student and Dr. Peter Buck, his family friend in the US. Fred took a loan of $1,000 loan from Peter Buck in order to start a sandwich store so that he could make the money he required to pay as college tuition fees. The first store which was opened in Bridgeport was named Pete’s Super Submarines.
The yummy sandwiches has been proved as a healthy alternative to the traditional fast food stuff which have a lot of fat content in them. The speciality food franchise has been ranking regularly in the list of Franchise 500 of Entrepreneur magazine. Apart from this, the Subway chain also has been recognised as the number one provider of franchise opportunities to people.
The first unit of Subway franchise was opened at Wallingford in Connecticut in the year 1974.
Now the Subway franchising chain has spread to more than eighty five countries and has around 27,408 restaurants in these franchising territories. More than 150,000 people are employed by the various Subway restaurants, which are all franchised.
