Papa John's founder John Schnatter evolved the idea of opening his own restaurant in his student days. As a high school student, he worked at a local pizza pub in Jeffersonville, Indiana, and realized that there was something missing from national pizza chains. This missing item was the quality of the traditional pizza and its delivery to the customer's door step.
In 1984, John Schnatter knocked converted his father’s broom closet into a pizza outlet. He doled out the money for used restaurant equipment by selling his prized 1972 Z28 Camaro and began selling his pizzas to the tavern's customers. He become an instant hit as customers loved the pizzas so much that John was able to expand. He opened his first Papa John's restaurant in 1985.
The simple formula for his success was to do it better than anyone else. John maintained a simple menu and was able to focus on the quality of his product by using only superior-quality ingredients. The commitment to quality was seen in the fresh water-purified traditional dough, the vine-ripened fresh-packed tomato sauce, which goes from the vine to the can in an average of six hours, the cheese made with 100% mozzarella and many other premium ingredients, etc. 06.06.2007
